FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

Good question. Visit Getting Started for the basic tips. If you have any questions beyond that, please do not hesitate to write to me and ask. I want to help you as best I can.

Who may use PRblogs.org?

Any students, faculty and practitioners in Public Relations / Marketing Communications. These blogs are intended for discussion of PR/Marcom topics. Certainly we will not hold the odd personal post against you in your blogs. But, we do prefer that the majority of your posts be about your experiences and thoughts relating to the practice of public relations and marketing communications. Feel free to discuss any pertinent topic associated with the field. Questions? Write to me.

I’d really like to use this for classes. May I?

Sure. In fact, remember that you can do it one of two ways.

First, every blog can have many members. So, you could create one blog and make it a group blog. You then let each student have an account (be a User) in the blog. They can register, or you can register them. Give them user levels. You, as the #10 level Admin, then control the whole blog. This is good if you want to be able to edit / moderate their posts.

Or, you can let each and every student sign up for one in your class. I’m happy with either choice. If you let them all have individual blogs, you might suggest that they all make the blog name contain something like the course code (PR101). After the class, they can change the name of the blog and keep it. Questions? Write to me.

I’ve noticed a few bugs / quirks in the software.

Yes, so have we. This site is powered by WordPress Multiuser 1.6.1.3 (WPMU). What that means is, this is software under development. The WPMU developers are hard at work and the software is now stable enough that WordPress has launched WordPress.com based upon the same software. We will endeavor to upgrade with each new ’stable Alpha version’ they provide. For those familiar with software development, I realize that ’stable’ and ‘Alpha’ are two terms that should never be used together. However, WPMU is getting closer and closer to Beta and then, I hope - a truly stable version. Questions? Write to me.

I want more Themes to choose from!

You may visit the WordPress Theme Browser and pick out a theme that you like. I will attempt to upload it for your use. There are ’some’ themes that just don’t work here. As we identify them, I will begin composing a list. Right now, the Fleur theme, is the only one I know does not render well in IE browser. Any others I find, I will post here. Questions? Write to me.

I want more Plugins to choose from!

Good. So do we. You may visit the WordPress Plugin Database and look for available plugins. I will take each request for the addition of a plugin on a case by case basis. Some are just not appropriate for a blog community. Some plugins work for a single installation of Wordpress, but do not work with WPMU - our version. Questions? Write to me.
